Dislike: Damien Hirst

Where: Season 5, episode 20

BLAIR: I’m sorry, but if you insist that Damien Hirst’s work is anything but simple-minded, sensationalist and fatuous…I’m not sure I’ll be able to lay my head next to yours tonight.<
DAN: But you can’t deny his influence on the art market today is massive.

One of the things Dan and Blair could not agree upon was modern artist Damien Hirst. Genius or not so much? Opinions of course differ, and Hirst has been controversial artist from the vey start. Here is a brief description of Hirst’s work from the fabulous Gagosian site:

Since emerging onto the international art scene in the late 1980s, Damien Hirst has created installations, sculptures, paintings, and drawings that examine the complex relationships between art and beauty, religion and science, and life and death. From serialized paintings of multicolored spots to animal specimens preserved in tanks of formaldehyde, his work challenges contemporary belief systems, tracing the uncertainties that lie at the heart of human experience.

So, are we Team Blair or Team Dan on this issue? Duh, that question at least is a no brainer!

Until next time, XO XO
